The Early Years
The title "I'm in the Mood for Dancing" recorded by The Nolan Sisters (The
Nolans) was released in
November 1979. The song reached No. 2 in the UK
in February 1980 and has since become synonymous with the
group, selling millions of copies. It charted well elsewhere
around the world, especially in Australia, Ireland and Japan, where it reached No.1. It remained at No.1 for
two weeks selling 670,000 copies in under a
month. The single was certified Gold (although it has since achieved
far greater status) by the BPI and was certified as the 27th
biggest-selling single of 1980 in the UK by the BPI
(British Phonographic Institute). In 1980 Mike
Myers was nominated for two Ivor Novello awards by the
British Academy of Composers Songwriters and Authors (BASCA)
for the Most Played Single and for Songwriter Of
The Year.
The self-titled album Nolan Sisters, which featured the first
two charting Epic singles, eventually reached No.15 in
the UK. The group's 1980 album Making Waves peaked at No.11
but had one of the longest UK album chart runs of 33 weeks.
Singles from the album included "Don't Make Waves"
(UK No.12, IE No.5)
and "Gotta Pull Myself Together" (UK No.9, IE
No.8),
the latter reaching No.3 in 1981 in Australia, with the album
reaching No.10. The last UK single release from Making Waves,
"Attention To Me" reached (UK No.9, IE No.5).
The title "Sexy Music", also featured on Making Waves, won the
Grand Prize at the 1981 Tokyo Music Festival, and was
subsequently released as a single in Japan. This became the
Nolans's third No.1 on the Japanese Import chart - following
"I'm in the Mood for Dancing" and "Gotta Pull
Myself Together". The album Portrait would become the
group's second Top 10 UK album, reaching No.7 in 1982,
and was also the source of their final UK Top 20 single "Don't Love Me Too Hard"
(UK No.14, IE No.17). Mike
has worked with many music-industry greats. Billy Ocean who's "Love Really Hurts Without You" reached
No.2 on the U.K. singles chart, and quickly found its way to international success in 1976,
and the subsequent "Stop Me (If You've Heard It All Before")
penned by Mike and Billy and reaching No.13, were just
the beginning. The two penned several titles of the eleven cuts that made up Billy's self-titled debut album. With songs penned and
produced/ co-produced by Mike Myers, The Dooleys,
another successful band from the 80's, had ten Top 75 chart entries between
the years 1977 and
1981. Seven made the Top 40, including three Top 10
hits. In all they spent 83 weeks in the Top 75. The Dooleys
"Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love With You" reached No.13
in 1979, with "Love Of My Life" reaching No. 9 towards the end of
that year. "Honey I'm Lost" took them back into the
chart reaching No.24. "Wanted" soared to No. 3
out-selling the corresponding ABBA single (Does Your Mother Know).
The 1980 singles "Love Patrol", "Body Language" and "In A Riddle"
also reached chart success. New Beginning (Mamba Seyra)
the Single by Bucks Fizz released in 1986 was a comeback hit, achieving their highest chart placing for four years. It is still
considered one of the group's best remembered songs.
The song was notable for its full and lavish production and multi-layered vocal work and received much praise from critics as well as becoming very popular on radio. The song became a big hit in the Summer of 1986 and reached the top ten in the UK, becoming a
No.8 hit and spending 10 weeks on the chart. The song remains among the group's most highly regarded
work. Mike
has also written and produced numerous original musical works
including; cues, stingers, idents, logos and jingles for both the radio and television industry
i.e: Martini, Pepsi, Qantas, JVC, Paco Rabanne, Northwest Airlines, Mitsubishi...
